The Davis Story
In 1902, the area of Shreveport, Louisiana
known as West End was a bustling neighborhood of working-class
families and businesses. That year, William Hamilton Davis opened
a general merchandise store on Texas avenue selling work clothes,
shoes, hats, and tobacco. At the time, the store was known as
W.H. Davis General Merchandise (later becoming Davis'
Men's Store when W.H.'s son took over the store
many years later).
In 1902, there was a train yard in West
End and Davis himself was a former railroad man. This gave him
a ready market pool and knowledge of the needs of those buyers.
Davis had the original store built and included a second floor
for living space. He and his family lived above the store until
his death in 1951.
The Early Years...
During the early years of the store, there were still cattle
drives down Texas Avenue in front of the store. Clarence Lee
Davis, the son of W.H., became the second generation owner of
the store successfully helping his father guide it through the
difficult days of World War I, the Great Depression, and World
War II. During this time the store continued to evolve as a
working man's store.
After World War II, Edsel and Bill Davis, the sons of Clarence
Lee joined the family business. Edsel had saved $1500 while
serving in the US Navy during the war. He decided to use that
savings to add a Suit department to the merchandise mix at the
store. The store then carried a full line of dress clothing,
work clothes, shoes, hats, and sportswear.
Davis Big and Tall today
As competition in the regular size men's business intensified,
the Davis brothers decided in 1970 to change their focus and
became some of the first pioneers in the retail Big and Tall
business. After operating as a family owned and operated business
for more than a century, Davis' Big and Tall Men's
Store has developed a reputation for being the premier Big and
Tall men's store in the Ark-La-Tex area.
